Why is it...?

Why is it I have had some of my best ideas and been able to write clearly and to the point first thing in the morning ?

Over the summer, I was waking at some very odd hours and often (after having turned off the alarm) at just past that point between sleep and fully awake, I would often have to write things down and would then hit a momement of clarity and full conciousness ?

It's happened again this morning, this is why I'm on here now. The cards....after having spent a few more hours working on them last night, I was being to lose direction ...again.

But this morning, it has just occurred to me that these have a potential to be more than just a Uni project and is now a very real prospect of an ongoing piece or body of work. They started out as one thing, but are now going in a different direction, this issue being what is that ?

It's difficult to put it into words (and at risk of this sounding pretencious) because right here, right now it's more than a feeling but is something just out of reach...

Enigrams, they are certainly that. Probably the best way to describe how I see them now. I don't know in what direction they are going or how I'm going to get there and this in itself is a metaphor for life ?

How annoying, my last post seems to be missing....and I'm sure I wrote something witty, insightful and bordering on genius....ho hum.

To recap....Ok, the presentation of the Super Nodals and the memory cards went well.

Notes to self...look at printing onto foil techniques.

Also, I like Tim's suggestions of creating less obvious icons...I think the term Enigrams or Mementographs suits them better.

Some element of randomness or chance needs to be incorporated also...perhaps blindfold myself and visualise and draw what I "see" in my minds eye perhaps ?

Of course, there is also an alternate to consider, having a set Jungian based cards also ?

So I could in fact create 6 sets of 4 cards per suit, having 3 sets of Jungian based cards also fits with Jung's coining of the term synchronicity to describe what he called the "acausal connecting principle" that links mind and matter.

He said this underlying connectedness manifests itself through meaningful coincidences that cannot be explained by cause and effect. Such synchronicities occur, he theorized, when a strong need arises in the psyche of an individual.

He described three types that he had observed:

the coinciding of a thought or feeling with an outside event.
a dream, vision or premonition of something that then happens in the future;
and a dream or vision that coincides with an event occurring at a distance.

No one has come up with a definition that has superceded his, although there has been debate on whether events linked to precognition and clairvoyance should be included as synchronicity.

This last point brings me back to my original thoughts about this project and the use of Zener Cards.
Looking at what constitutes identity from a Freudian point of view, there are 3 aspects of the psyche'. The uncoordinated instinctual trends are the "id"; the organised realistic part of the psyche is the "ego," and the critical and moralising function the "super-ego."

I have taken this as a springboard to help define my cards :

Four suits each comprising of six cards. Each suit defines me within it's contruct, which are as follows :

The ID
The Ego
The Super Ego

The forth set is defined by fact, that is, the real and tangible things about myself, in the here and now, as opposed to the imaginary or visonary aspects of the other three sets.

"Things that are hard to bear are sweet to remember" Seneca.

Memory - what triggers a memory ?

Association.

Also, memories are primarily evoked by the senses

Touch
Sight
Taste
Smell
Sound

Words that have positive and / or negative meaning that express these senses

Hard / Soft
Bright / Dark
Sweet / Sour
Growth / Decay
Loud / Quiet

Colours can also express positive and negative emotions

Positive colours :

White
Yellow
Green

Negative colours :

Black
Purple
Red

Primary colours express action, power and movement

Secondary colours suggest restraint and reserve

Subdued colours are reflective and relaxing

Blue gives a sense of openess and freedom, like an open sky

Green and Brown are both Earth tones found in nature and tend to be muted and understated

The idea for my Mememory cards is a set that are an aid to combating Alzheimer's.

Looking at the idea of positive and negative reinforcement, any set must include both good and bad triggers. Without the bad, we cannot appreciate the good.

So, the cards should reflect both good and bad, use positive and negative space and show considered use of colour.

What is often used as a memory aid ?

Photos
Tattoos
Videos
Music

Also, what triggers long-term and short-term memory ?

Conversely, what blocks memory ?

Latin phrases that express a change ....

Tempus Fugit = Time Flies

Memento Mori = Remember that you will die.

The working title for my game....Use it or Lose it.

As for the recipe, I have chosen to aim my easy cook methods at the young men 18 - 26 years old. Those maybe living away from home for the first time, this would be bought by mothers and girlfriends as a gift. It's a fun gimmick that is simple and almost foolproof.

My recipe will be presented in the form of a flow chart. That is, a series of balloons that illustrate the number of ingredients and stages of cookery. The chart will be able to be left on the roll or torn off and used as a work surface and is a map for the ingredients to be laid out, in sequence.

The name of my product....SUPER NODALS.

A reference to cheap and easy food with a blokey and techy angle....

NODE is a connection point, either a redistribution point or a communication endpoint.

The recipe project, I've looked at a number of "alternatives" to a traditionally formatted cook book that already exist. These are index cards, Roladex cards and spiral bound books that allow for easier page turning.

For the next project, I have chosen to do the Recipe and the Memory cards.

I think the cards is probably one of the most interesting things that I have been asked to do in the last few years. The more I have thought about it, the greater the fun has been. It works on a number of different levels, in as much as it is illustrative of who I am at this time and when I'm older, it will also serve as a reminder who I was. It like being asked to create a time capsule for myself or capturing a part of me (not on camera or film) and preserving it forever, almost as if it is in a scrapbook. The difference being is how that information is presented. Instead of putting the information about me into a more linear format, I'm presenting myself in a more fluid format, which allows for a greater freedom to interpret and reinvent myself and how I see myself.
